Masked Water Tyrant
The Masked Water Tyrant (Fluvicola nengeta) is a common bird of eastern and south-eastern Brazil with a second population inhabiting the coastline of western Ecuador and north-western Peru. The birds live mostly near rivers, lagoons, or swamps, generally prefering open land instead of rainforests, for example. The species is also well adapted to humans and occurs in urban settings as long as they find insects to prey on. It even benefits from the proceeding deforestation, thereby enlarging its range towards southern Brazil. I have photographed these small, agile birds on the beach of Recife in eastern Brazil in September 2010.
