The Tricolored Heron (Egretta tricolor) occurs from the southern states of the USA through Mexico and Central America up to Brazil and Peru. Within its range, these mid-sized herons favour coastal marshlands, swamps, or mangroves. They are most easily spotted during the day when they wade through shallow waters hunting mainly fish, crustaceans, molluscs, reptiles, as well as amphibians. I have seen these birds (mostly juveniles) quite commonly at the Carribean coast of Panama near the city of Colón in March 2014.
I love the way they hunt for food. Quite a show they put on
Beautiful pics!
