Ludwig’s Bustard

The Ludwig’s Bustard (Neotis ludwigii) is a large bird occurring in the dry grasslands and savannahs of southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa). Most of the time, the bustards walk on the ground searching for insects, their most important prey. Additionally, they feed on seeds and flowers. Generally, the species is little known, but seems to be threatened particularly due to collisions with power lines. I have photographed these beautiful birds on a journey through Namibia in February 2007. You may click on the photographs for a better view.
