The Eurasian Jay (Garrulus glandarius) is a bird occurring through much of Europe, parts of northern Africa, and within a belt through Asia up to Japan and Thailand. Within this enormous range, the birds prefer forests as their habitats. Their diet is very varied including fruits, seeds, flowers, invertebrates, small reptiles, and even young birds. In Europe they are known to love acorns which they even collect and hide for later consumption during the winter months. Originally a forest dweller, the birds also enter cities and I commonly see them from the windows of my appartment. In April 2008 I took the time for a series of photographs from my bedroom window here in Germany. Due to blue feathers on their flanks the birds look very pretty – or what do you think?
Great series of images, with a nice variety of settings and activities.
thank you – glad you like it!!
What a charming little bird Matthias! I agree with you about the patterned feathers of blue on the wings, very pretty indeed!
thank you – yes, it is really quite pretty and luckily you can see them really often here! they are about the size of a roller – not too little…
Thanks for giving me some perspective on their size Matthias; I guess their dainty appearance belied the fact that they’re not actually as little as they seem š
