The Red-legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus) is a very small bird species occurring from southern Mexico through Central America to Peru, Bolivia, and central Brazil. The tiny birds are only 12 cm long and weigh around 14 g! But their small size is compensated by a truly spectacular plumage. The breeding males are dark blue with black patches and carry a turquoise crown. In contrast, the females are mainly green with a streaked breast. The birds can be found at the edges of forests, in woodlands, shrubby areas, plantations, and gardens. They feed mainly on nectar, but also catch the occasional insect. I have seen these magnificent little birds at several localities in the Canal Area of Panama during a journey in February 2014. As always, you may click on the photographs to enlarge them…
