The Grey Lourie (Corythaixoides concolor) is a medium-sized bird species occurring in southern Africa (Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique). Additionally, it is also called “go-away-bird” refering to its characteristic call which resembles this phrase. Both sexes look alike and have an uniformly grey plumage. On top of their heads, the birds carry a prominent crest which is raised if agitated. They are quite common in dry, open woodlands, thornveld, farms, parks, and suburban gardens where they feed mainly on fruits, flowers, seeds, insects, and snails. I took the photographs in this post during a safari in the Etosha National Park, Namibia (February 2012).
Wow! Amazing bird. Didn’t know this one at all.
thanks for your comment! The Grey Lourie is actually quite common in parts of southern Africa…
I’m sure. I have only spent about three weeks in total in sub-Saharan Africa, so I am sure there are many wonderful and common birds still to discover. That pleases me a lot 🙂
oh – journeys to sub-Saharan Africa are always worth it!!! for so many reasons!!
What a gorgeous bird! Nice photographs!
thank you!! 🙂
Now this bird I know very well, Matthias! We have several visiting our garden on a daily basis. They’re quite intelligent birds. Great photos, as always!
thank you!! I am glad you like the photos and the birds…
Magnificent bird – and lovely shots. They look so regal with that large crest.
