male European Greenfinch

True to its name, the European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris) is a small green bird occurring almost everywhere in Europe. Furthermore, the species is native to parts of northern Africa and western Asia. Additional populations in South America, Australia, and New Zealand can be traced back to introduced individuals. The birds show a characteristic sexual dimorphism with males being much more colourful (=greener) than the rather dull females. Their original habitats were open woodlands, small clearings, or edges of forests, but today the birds occur mostly in parks, gardens, cemeteries, and orchards. Their diet is very diverse including insects, but also seeds, fruits, and berries. I took the photographs in this post in April 2015 in northern Germany.
