China 2007 (part XII): Damenglong

Damenglong, Yunnan:

view towards Myanmar

After our remarkable nature experience in the Sanchahe Nature Reserve, we took the bus from Jinghong to the small town of Damenglong close to the border with Myanmar. Due to the very poor road conditions, there were almost no other tourists and the entire place had a beautiful sleepy atmosphere. It was really very idyllic! We spent a couple of days hiking in the hills surrounding the town and visiting the stupas in the forests or checking out small rural villages. A bigger road is planned to link China with Myanmar and Thailand via the nearby border crossing, but construction seems to be not finished yet – who knows what the countryside will look like, if it is completed and traffic picks up? A quick look at satellite images in GoogleMaps suggests a drastic change in the landscape over the last years…

For us, the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of tropical Xishuangbanna was the perfect place to recover from a long journey through China. Our holidays were over and we had to take the bus back to Kunming from where we continued home via Guangzhou. I really hope you enjoyed to relive this trip with me and if you cannot get enough, you may just start all over again with post no. 1! šŸ™‚
