Crested Kingfisher near Beijing
With a body length of up to 43 cm, the Crested Kingfisher (Megaceryle lugubris) is one of the largest kingfishers of the world. The birds occur from the Himalayas and its foothills through Southeast Asia and China until Japan and parts of Russia. They favour mountain streams and rivers where they hunt mainly for fishes and crabs. I have photographed this impressive species on a birding trip along a river near Beizhuangzhen, north of Beijing, in September 2015.
