Cape Sounion, Greece:
Temple of Poseidon
After visiting the most prominent sights of Athens, I took a bus to Cape Sounion at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula.
The 70-km-long drive followed the coastline and offered beautiful views across the Saronic Gulf. The major sight at Cape Sounion is the Temple of Poseidon constructed ca. 440 BC on top of a rocky cliff overlooking the sea. The ruins have been a popular destination for travelers since a long time with one column bearing an inscription of the English poet Lord Byron who visited the area in 1810-11.

On the way back to Athens, I enjoyed the sunset from the bus window. The following morning, I departed early for a bus tour to the eastern part of the Peloponnese.

One of my favourite places in the world… love the silhouetted photo of the temple from sideways with the hill! And the one with the Byron carving, I didn’t have the patience to locate it (but then it was nearly forty degrees and the kids were desperate to get down to the beach! (Shame about the ugly hotel down there.)
thank you for your comment! 🙂 I definitely agree, it is a wonderful place!! I was lucky with beautiful sunshine in March and temperatures around 20°C… I went there with a guided tour and therefore didn’t have to search for the carving myself 😉 unfortunately that also meant that we didn’t see the sunset at the temple… next time! 🙂
