Teotihuacan, Mexico:

I visited the spectacular ruins of Teotihuacan on an early morning tour from nearby Mexico City.

Teotihuacan is an ancient city approximately 40 km northeast of Mexico City. It consists of a large number of ruins centered around the so-called Avenue of the Dead. The two most prominent structures are the Pyramid of the Moon and the Pyramid of the Sun, which dominate the scenery by their unbelievable size. Luckily, it is possible to climb both pyramids enabling fantastic views across the entire excavation site. Between 100 and 650 AD, the area was inhabited by up to 200,000 people and constituted the major capital of entire Central America. For unknown reasons, the city was more or less abandoned by 750 AD and when the Aztecs settled in the area, they found only ruins. Many mysteries enshroud the history of Teotihuacan up until today and inspire the fantasy of millions of visitors each year.

After visiting impressive Teotihuacan, I had to leave Mexico and continue my journey: an airplane brought me all the way to Argentina, where I would do field work in the following weeks.
