Reaching land’s end at Holnis, Germany (10/2018)

land’s end at Holnis

In October, I visited the northernmost point of Germany along the coast of the Baltic Sea.

A tiny speck of sand forms the peninsula of Holnis in Schleswig-Holstein. The landscape is characterized by fields, meadows, and some tiny villages with wetlands serving migratory birds as resting and feeding grounds. Farm tracks and beaches allow hiking and offer views across the Baltic Sea towards Denmark. While the German North Sea island of Sylt is still further north, it is also much more crowded with visitors. At Holnis you instead feel like you reached the end of the road…

I had a nice afternoon walk at the peninsula even though the weather was cloudy. Autumn migration was in full swing with geese crowding the wetlands.
