The Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani) is a bird occurring in Central and parts of South America (Brazil, western Ecuador, northern Argentina). The birds belong to the cuckoo family, but do not practice brood parasitism, instead, several females build a common nest and share the duties of incubation and feeding. They prey mainly on insects which they pick up on the ground or among trees and bushes. The social anis can be commonly seen in smaller groups, even within cities, and attract attention due to their loud calling.
I have seen and photographed these interesting birds with their peculiar beaks on a journey through Brazil, in Belem, in September 2010.
We are suppose to have the groove-billed ani here in Florida but I have yet to see one. Great pic!
thank you! yes, you are right, but even the Smooth-billed Ani is supposed to occur in the Caribbean and in southern Florida! Good luck with finding it!! 🙂
Thank you! I will keep a birds eye out for it, lol.
Lovely photos. I snapped their groove-billed cousins recently.
