The Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea) is a small heron breeding in the southern US, the Carribbean, and further south to Uruguay and Peru. The birds stalk their prey (consisting of frogs, fish, crustaceans, rodents, and insects) in shallow waters of swamps or coastal areas. They frequently nest together with other herons such as the Snowy Egret (Egretta thula). I have photographed these rather common birds at the coast near Colón in central Panama during a visit in March 2014.
