Grey Lourie

The Grey Lourie (Corythaixoides concolor) is a medium-sized bird species occurring in southern Africa (Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique). Additionally, it is also called “go-away-bird” refering to its characteristic call which resembles this phrase. Both sexes look alike and have an uniformly grey plumage. On top of their heads, the birds carry a prominent crest which is raised if agitated. They are quite common in dry, open woodlands, thornveld, farms, parks, and suburban gardens where they feed mainly on fruits, flowers, seeds, insects, and snails. I took the photographs in this post during a safari in the Etosha National Park, Namibia (February 2012).
