The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a bird species occurring at the west and east coast of America. It breeds from the southern USA up to northern Chile and Venezuela, but outside the breeding time it can be found from Canada to the southernmost tip of South America. The birds are very gregarious living together in large colonies. Characteristic is their hunting behaviour: the pelicans dive head-first into the water to catch fish which constitutes the dominant part of the diet. I have photographed these fascinating birds along the Canal Zone of Panama (February and March 2014) and in the harbour of San Francisco, USA (October 2009).
