Lesser Kiskadee

The Lesser Kiskadee (Pitangus lictor) is a small flycatcher native to Central and parts of Southern America (from Belize and Guatemala in the north up to Bolivia, Argentina, and Brazil in the south). The species favours subtropical to tropical lowlands near water as their habitats including moist shrublands or swamps, but also parks. It resembles the Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) closely, but can be distinguished by its smaller size and a more slender bill. Commonly, the birds perch on lower branches of trees and shrubs looking out for insects which comprise most of their diet. I have observed these colorful kiskadees at several localities along the Panama Canal during a journey in March 2014.
