Aga Khan Palace
Following my weekend trips to the nature reserves of Ranthambore and Tadoba in May, I had the chance to visit colleagues and their research institutes during June. My first journey brought me to Pune where I spent several days discussing research projects and studying material.
During one afternoon, I could visit the most important sights of the city: the Aga Khan Palace, the Shaniwar Wada, and the Pataleshvara Cave Temple. Mahatma Gandhi was interned in the Aga Khan Palace from 1942 to 1944 together with other important nationalist leaders. Kasturba Gandhi, his wife, and Mahadeobhai Desai, his secretary, died in the palace and two shrines containing their ashes can be found within the palace grounds. Shaniwar Wada was a palace constructed in the 18th century, but except for an impressive gate only foundations can be seen today. The Pataleshvara Cave Temple was constructed in the 8th century and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
