Tabo-Kaza, Himachal Pradesh:

Dhankar Monastery above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers
Compared to our thrilling drive to Tabo (~3300 m) on the previous day, the journey to Kaza (~3600 m) was much more relaxed.

Before breakfast, we went on a short walk to a few caves in the hill side above Tabo, which served as shelters for monks and pilgrims in ancient times. While the caves were rather unremarkable, the view across the valley was nice. The subsequent drive to Kaza led through the wide Spiti Valley flanked by majestic mountains. On the way, we visited Dhankar Monastery (~3900 m) sitting dramatically on a steep cliff above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers.

After four days of driving, we finally reached Kaza in the afternoon. It was good that we did not hurry reaching the town, because in the coming days we would do research in the surrounding mountains. Since we would work at altitudes of 4200-4500 m, it was definitely necessary to get used to the thin mountain air!
